Calling All Moms.

I have some questions...

First off, what was the best advice you received?

What baby registry item could you or your lil' one not live without?

Were the pre-baby education classes worth it?

What is one thing you wish you would have been told prior to the baby arriving?

Thanks so much for your help!
Any additional advice is, of course, greatly appreciated!!

The book What to Expect the First Year was very helpful for me.

Did you know the worst position to labor or birth is on your back? Laying down flat compresses the birth canal & slows labor! Labor progresses quickest when a woman is upright, mobile and working *with* gravity...

1. Best Advice- You are the mom. You're decision is the best decision ever. So when you can learn to forget about people thinking you are doing it the wrong way...you're golden. (Seriously from birth, to what you feed your child, to where/how they sleep, to when they walk, talk, go to school, everything...do the way you feel the most comfortable = gold).

Most essential= moby wrap, carter's onsies, a good stroller, a GREAT rocker. Least essential= try to borrow a swing, bouncer, and play mat thing. they take up so much space and are used for such a short period of time.

Thing I wished someone would have told me- this is HARD work. Not quite like in the movies. But also extremely wonderful. Also, sleep when the baby sleeps...SERIOUSLY, because when #2 comes along you don't get to do this because you have a toddler at home.

If you ever have any other questions, ask away!

I liked the snap'n'go stroller that was compatible with my Graco infant carrier. It was so light and non-bulky which was nice as it took me a long time to be able to lift any weight after childbirth.

I wish I had learned how to operate my breast pump before the baby came. I hadn't planned on using it until I went back to work, but because of nursing difficulties, I ended up having to use it for the first few months. It was very stressful trying to figure out how to work it with a crying, hungry 2 day old baby. As a side note, the lactation specialists at Loudoun Pediatrics are angels on this earth!

My favorite thing I wish I had figured out sooner was a newborn station set up on a table conjoined to the side of my bed. It saved me from actually getting out of bed every few hours. It had the following things at my fingertips: diapers, wipes, a low lit lamp, a cooler with ice packs, breastpump, bottlewarmer, extra bb clothes, burp cloths, etc . . .

Also, you can get diapers at a discounted price shipped to you for free on a regular schedule (Amazon or Diapers.com) . . . once you run out of your baby shower supply.

Best advice- enjoy every minute of motherhood! Time really does fly and the more you rush it, the more you miss it :( these are the best times so make sure you cherish every moment and every milestone.

Most essential item- I found the snuggie wrap extremely useful! It swaddles them nice and tight and keeps them warm at the same time since it's made of blanket material. Plus it keeps them still at night so they don't wake up as easily. Also, I second the comment about the rocker/swing. You'll need a place to lay him while you cook, do dishes, shower, fold laundry, etc.

Didn't pay for any classes...I learned everything "on the job" and that is the best experience you can get. Google helped quite a bit too!

Last but not least, I wish someone would have MADE me sleep when the baby slept. I took advantage of the time to get stuff done but that was a mistake...sleep every chance you get because you may not know the difference between night and day for a little while!

You will be a fantastic mom and you have so many people to lean on for questions and help. And don't feel like a bad mom when you get frustrated. It WILL happen, just don't feel guilty. We all go through it at some point.

Here's what I'm going to tell you; you already have all the tools and know how to be a great Mom you probably just don't know it yet. Be confident in who you are, and your ability to mother. Trust your gut, you know your child best. And don't get to caught up in what other's opinions are do what's best always for your baby and family. that will never fail!

best registry items: bobby pillow, burp rags, onesies, breast pump not an expensive one per say but one that fits your needs and does the job.

baby classes, we didn't take them, our doctor told me they were a waste of money and so we didn't take them. the labor & delivery nurses have a lot of knowledge and will help you during delivery. we read a book called Husband Coached Childbirth that was really helpful.

One thing I wish someone would have told me was that expect your recovery time to be longer than you expect. Having a baby is no joke and your not always 100% right after. it may take longer, and it will probably hurt "down there" for a while. give yourself time to heal, and take care of the area. Oh, and take help whenever it's offered. Sleep when the baby sleeps or at least relax. sit on the couch read a blog or a book just rest. you will need it.

a twenty-something living in Northern Virginia, but a city girl at heart. My husband is a youth pastor, and we absolutely LOVE our students! I love my husband, coca-cola, bargain shopping, Chick-fila and enjoy laughing A LOT! We are slowly working on home "projects," enjoying our BOXER, named Cooper, and getting ready to add another addition to the family!
